Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez honors Atty. Ruben R. Canoy, upholds press freedom
“ANG lungsod nga nasayod maoy makahatag kusog sa atong kagawasan, apan ang lungsod nga mapasagaron maoy makapukan sa atong kagawasan," emphasized former city mayor Atty. Ruben R. Canoy.
Indeed, a well-informed populace is crucial for the functioning of a vibrant democracy. In the face of current national challenges, we are fortunate to have access to timely and relevant news. As the saying goes, "knowledge is power," and staying informed equips citizens to engage effectively in democratic processes and advocate for their rights. This empowerment is made possible largely due to the efforts of journalists and media professionals who tirelessly work to deliver accurate information.
Despite their pivotal role in shaping public discourse, however, journalists, media professionals, and advocates of press freedom often receive little recognition for their contributions to the advancement of democratic principles.

In line with this, and in honor of Atty. Ruben R. Canoy—a statesman, poet, writer, and a revered figure in Cagayan de Oro's history—City Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez has proposed an ordinance to institute the Reuben R. Canoy International Press Freedom Golden Award. This prestigious accolade, aptly named the "Ang Lungsod nga Nasayod Award" or simply the "Reuben R. Canoy Press Freedom Award," will honor individuals who exemplify Canoy’s enduring legacy as a staunch advocate of press freedom and the people's right to unbiased and reliable information.
The selection criteria for the award emphasize highlighting underreported local stories or issues, as well as exploring new perspectives on familiar topics, with a strong emphasis on capturing the essence of local experiences. The Award aims to recognize originality, professionalism, initiative, and moral courage displayed by writers, journalists, and publishers.
With this proposal, VM Bebot Rodriguez reaffirms the people's fundamental right to a free flow of information, championing transparency, and empowering individuals to express their opinions without fear of reprisal, as enshrined in the 1987 Philippine Constitution.
By celebrating those who bravely tell the stories and hold the line, this legislation will not only pay tribute to Atty. Canoy but also reaffirm that the City of Cagayan de Oro is a champion in upholding democratic values and press freedom.
