Sacala pushes for Isra’ wal Mi'raj observance
“TOGETHER we can make Cagayan de Oro City a model of cultural understanding and inclusivity.”
This was emphasized by Councilor Kenneth John Sacala in his special report, during the 68th Regular Session of the 20th City Council presided over by City Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez, urging the city government of Cagayan de Oro and its constituents to join the observance of Isra’ wal Mi'raj on February 8, 2024.

This significant event in Islam marks Prophet Muhammad's night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascent to the heavens. While not recognized as a legal holiday in our city, Councilor Sacala highlighted that the occasion holds legal recognition under Article 169 of Presidential Decree No. 1083 as a Muslim Legal Holiday.
Under PD 1083, all Muslim government officials and employees are legally entitled to be excused from reporting to the office in observance of the holiday.
The councilor added that recognizing the significance of Isra’ wal Mi'raj does not only demonstrate the city's commitment to diversity, unity, and respect for various religious beliefs but also celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Muslim community.
In closing, the councilor proposed the passage of a resolution to officially celebrate the observance, a proposal that was unanimously approved by the members of the 20th City Council.
