Public works cmte backs ordinance naming unnamed streets in Macasandig
The City Council Committee on Public Works, chaired by Councilor Edgar S. Cabanlas, supported the barangay ordinance proposing to name the unnamed streets in Macasandig.
Kagawad Amor Sanchez of Barangay Macasandig expressed that some barangay streets are referred to only by traditional common names which have no historical records at all; thus, the need to name these not only to promote tourism and economic development but also to preserve historically valuable information about Macasandig as a barangay.
In the guidelines of the ordinance, the streets must be named after Macasandignons who have notable historical backgrounds and have contributed significantly to the community, like Kap. Aaron M. Neri Sr., Ramon Yap, Sr. and Consolacion Abejuela.
Under Republic Act 7160, also known as the Local Government Code, the local government unit is granted the authority to name streets within its jurisdiction, subject to the review of the City Heritage Council.
The committee referred the matter to the City Legal Office for further study and scrutiny.
