Oro dads okay ordinance protecting children from online sexual abuse, exploitation

DURING its 117th regular session, the 20th City Council of Cagayan de Oro unanimously approved the “Ordinance Creating the Cagayan de Oro Golden Justice Zone,” principally authored by Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez and co-authored by Councilor Girlie Balaba.

The ordinance institutionalizes the role of the city government in the existing Justice Zone, headed by Executive Judge Arthur Abudiente, reinforcing efforts to protect children from foreign pedophiles, traffickers, and online exploitation in Northern Mindanao.

It also supports educational programs and community-based initiatives to prevent online child abuse, ensuring a safer environment for future generations.

In her message, VM Bebot emphasized that the ordinance is one of the many critical steps in making the city safe from any form of online sexual abuse and exploitation.

VM Bebot also extended her gratitude to the 20th City Council members, the Committee on Social Services chaired by Councilor Balaba, and all stakeholders who contributed to the ordinance’s development.

“Our efforts must go beyond policymaking. We must ensure that victims receive ultimate justice,” VM Bebot affirmed.

The ordinance is a by-product of discussions during the Justice Sector Coordinating Council (JSCC) meeting held on August 7-8, 2024, spearheaded by the Supreme Court of the Philippines and the Department of Justice, which focused on enhancing the capabilities of law enforcers and the judiciary to combat internet-based crimes against children.
