Ordinance institutionalizing barangay mental wellbeing corners OK’d

THE 20th City Council has approved the ordinance principally authored by Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez institutionalizing the Barangay Mental Well-Being Corner to provide accessible mental health services at the grassroots level.

The ordinance aims to ensure that every barangay has a safe space where individuals can seek help, guidance, and support, expanding the services outlined in City Ordinance No. 14297-2022, also known as the Mental Health Code, which VM Bebot previously authored.

Recognizing mental health as crucial yet often overlooked aspect of well-being, VM Bebot emphasized the need to institutionalize these mental wellbeing corners in every barangay to bridge the gap in access to mental health resources.

The barangay mental well-being corner will serve as a local hub where individuals can access information, support, and referrals to professional mental health services, ensuring that help is readily available within communities.

“This is not just about addressing mental health issues—it’s about creating a community that cares, supports, and uplifts one another," VM Bebot said.

“By bringing mental health services closer to the people, we can promote early intervention, reduce stigma, and build a more supportive society,” she added.

Vice Mayor Rodriguez emphasized that mental health is as vital as physical health and highlighted the importance of community involvement in fostering resilience.

The vice mayor expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the crafting of the ordinance since its filing on May 22, 2023, especially the Committee on Health, chaired by Councilor Ma. Lourdes Gaane, as well as experts and stakeholders who shared their insights and expertise.

The legislation was sponsored by the City Council committees on health, nutrition, and health insurance, chaired by Councilor Gaane, and on laws and rules, chaired by Councilor Edgar S. Cabanlas.  (JDOpema & JAOclarit/SP)
