Night Market plan urged
In a meeting conducted by the City Council committee on public utilities, roads and traffic management and energy presided over by Councilor Romeo V. Calizo last October 20, 2022, the Roads and Traffic Administration was tasked to finalize the proposal for the planned re-opening of the Night Market at Cogon Market area in coordination with the City Economic Enterprises Department.
The committee also requested the Office of the City Administrator to assist in incorporating all suggestions and recommendations to come up with the best concept for the Night Market.
This developed as RTA Acting Head Engr. Nonito A. Oclarit informed the Committee that City Mayor Klarex Uy has yet to designate the location of the night market in Cogon, adding he instructed them to prepare the Sketch Plan for the Night Market and for the meantime regulate the existing sidewalk vendors in the area.
He said the plan was approved in principle by the City Administrator and will be presented to Mayor Klarex Uy soon.
Oclarit explained that the plan does not include any road closure because the vendors are only allowed to display their goods in the sidewalk from 6:00 PM until 5:00 AM the next day around the immediate periphery of Cogon Market specifically along Osmeña Street, Oclarit added.
Selling at JR Borja Street will not be allowed since it is a two-way traffic and an alternate road of Recto Avenue and that vendors will have to follow the prescribed dimension of their area, he added.
“Kana ilang pwesto naay specific dimension or sukod na i-maintain nila. Gi-apply pud nato sa atong proposal ang sectioning sa mga baligya dili pareha karon na sagol-sagol. Kaning namaligya’g mga gulay diha sa JR Borja Extension, ibalhin nato na sila kay mo extend man ta paingon sa Osmeña Street. Naa gihapon sila specific dimension ug dili sila magpasobra sa kadak-on sa ilang displayhan,” Oclarit explained.
Present during the meeting was Councilors Malvern A. Esparcia and James K. Judith II.
The committee will meet again on October 27, 2022 for the presentation of the final Night Market plan.
