Health Comm to tackle proposed meat inspection code ordinance
THE City Council Committee on Health, Nutrition, and Health Insurance, chaired by Councilor Maria Lourdes S. Gaane, is set to tackle the proposed ordinance entitled “An Ordinance Providing for Meat Inspection Code of Cagayan de Oro”.
Authored by Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez, in collaboration with the City Veterinary Office, the proposed ordinance aims to be the local version of RA 9296 or the National Meat Inspection Code of the Philippines to meet national and international standards, including the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG).
The proposed ordinance shall apply to all meat establishments where food animals are slaughtered, prepared, processed, handled, packed, stored, or sold. It mandates all slaughterhouses and poultry dressing plants to ensure adequate protection and welfare of food animals while awaiting slaughter to avoid mishandling or inflicting unnecessary pain or distress during slaughter.
