Energy cmte puts FGen Hydro Project on hold
IN response to FGen San Isidro Hydro Power Corporation’s request, the Committee on Energy, chaired by Councilor Aga Suan, delayed its endorsement on the San Isidro Hydro Power Project to allow for further review.
During the meeting on August 9, a representative from FGen provided a presentation on the project's development since the last committee meeting including the completion of geotechnical investigations, the finalization of the preliminary engineering design, and the acquisition of a Certificate of Non-Overlap from both National Commission on Indigenous Peoples Talakag and Misamis Oriental.
The representative also informed the committee the requests and concerns raised by the committee in the previous meeting have been addressed already.
The representative likewise reiterated the company’s commitment to developing a sustainable energy project that can coexist harmoniously with local rafting activities—a key attraction in Cagayan de Oro.
Councilor Suan emphasized that while he is for development, it is crucial to explore different options and consider various issues, particularly the potential for flooding, before the matter is presented to the plenary.
Meanwhile, a representative from Safer River, Life Saver urged the company to engage barangays, other than Tignapoloan, including those located downstream, as they could also be affected. Establishing a communication portal for emergencies, especially for residents without social media access will be helpful, she added.
For their part, Hon. Yvy Emano supported the idea of involving all concerned stakeholders, while Councilor Ian Achas underscored the need for the active involvement of indigenous peoples and the importance of corporate social responsibility.
The committee decided to table the matter to await the comprehensive energy plan of the city, which is currently under development, to ensure that the proposal aligns with the city's strategic energy goals.
