Collaborative Research on City’s Environment up for study

The City Council Committee on Planning, Research and Innovation and People’s Organization Accreditation chaired by Councilor Ian Mark Q. Nacaya will convene tomorrow, June 6, 2023, to discuss the request of Liceo de Cagayan University (LDCU) to forge a formal partnership with the City Government for collaborative research on the City’s environment especially on rivers and water sources.

In a letter dated May 17, 2023, Dr. Maria Felicitas M. Mamauag, PhD, Director-Consultant, Office of the University Research and Coordination and Prof. Ma. Florecilla C. Cinches, PhD, Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Innovation, both cited their intention to collaborate with the city in pursuing research studies on environmental protection and rehabilitation particularly its rivers and water sources.

Upon completion of their faculty-led research entitled: “GIS-Based Water Quality Assessment of Cagayan de Oro River for Sustainable Intervention,” Cagayan de Oro River has been found to be organically polluted causing impairment to its water quality.

It is in this regard that the university, with its commitment to pursue research on environmental protection, expressed willingness to be instrumental in helping characterize the river’s water quality to identify polluted sources and offer sustainable solutions.
