THE city government continues to strengthen its disaster risk reduction management program.
The City Council headed by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, through the committee on climate change, adaptation and mitigation, and disaster risk reduction chaired by Councilor Teodulfo E. Lao, Jr., will look into the request to authorize Mayor Oscar S. Moreno to enter into and sign the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Philippine Institution of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Global Positioning System network project in Cagayan de Oro City.
The MOA provides that the PHIVOLCS shall provide the city with reports and other relevant information related to the continuous GPS receiver, and immediately respond to problems arising from the use of the equipment. It shall shoulder all the expenses necessary for the installation of the GPS receiver.
For its part, the city, in coordination with PHIVOLCS shall ensure the safety and security of the equipment at all times.
In his endorsement, the city mayor cited that the program will further strengthen the linkage between the national government through PHIVOLCS and the city government in the area of disaster management.
According to Mayor Moreno, the gadget is already installed at the New Legislative Building and is now operational providing prompt information on earthquakes. He said this will enable the city to receive timely news and prepare for any contingency whenever an earthquake strikes Mindanao.
