City Council honors late Aegis vocalist Mercy Sunot

During the regular session on Monday, the City Council expressed its deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Mercy Sunot, one of the lead vocalists of the renowned Aegis Band.

Councilor Joyleen Mercedes L. Balaba, author of the Resolution, cited Sunot's immense impact on music and culture, emphasizing that her artistry brought honor and pride to Cagayan de Oro and the entire country.

Sunot, a Kagay-anon artist celebrated for her powerful voice and iconic contributions to Original Pilipino Music (OPM), passed away on November 18, 2024, after battling breast and lung cancer.

The Aegis Band, widely acclaimed for hits such as "Halik," "Basang-Basa sa Ulan," and "Luha," remains a household name in the Philippines and among Filipino communities abroad.

Balaba also recommended Sunot's posthumous recognition, stating that her global influence and cultural contributions warrant acknowledgment from her hometown.

This recognition, she said, serves as a testament to the city's commitment to honoring Kagay-anons who have excelled in their respective fields.

The City Council Committee on Tourism, chaired by Councilor Jay R. Pascual, will study the proposal for the posthumous recognition to Ms. Sunot.
