Calizo backs renewal of cockpit franchise

COUNCILOR Romeo V. Calizo has expressed support to the renewal of the franchise of cockfighting business in Barangay Canitoan.

During Monday’s regular session presided over by Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin V. Uy, the councilor favorably endorsed the letter of Canitoan Pagatpat Cockers Association president, Mr. Isagani P. Legaspi, clarifying that the purpose for its franchise renewal is only to facilitate processing of their business but not for the resumption of its operations.

It can be recalled that City Mayor Oscar S. Moreno vetoed on January 4, 2022 Ordinance No. 14212-2021, which renewed the franchise granted to the Canitoan Pagatpat Cockers Association to operate the Pagatpat Cockpit Arena.

In a letter addressed to Councilor Calizo, the association assured the legislators they will operate only upon the approval of the City Mayor and in accordance with the IATF regulations.

“Somehow, along the way, there might be a misunderstanding that what they’re asking is the resumption of operations. But they’re only requesting for the renewal of their franchise so that they can go ahead with the application for business permit,” Calizo pointed out.

As requested, the matter was referred to the committee on games and amusement chaired by Councilor Roger D. Abaday, for appropriate action.
