Abaday wants Tagum seniors, children’s park replicated in CDO
WITH a vision to replicate Fe Misa Ayala Senior’s Park in Tagum City, Councilor Roger Abaday advocated for the establishment of the same park in Cagayan de Oro to harmonize spaces for both the elderly and youth.
During the 20th City Council’s regular session, presided over by Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez, Abaday showed a video of the park that left a strong impression on him, citing it would provide a vibrant space for children and families in the city at the same time foster a sense of community and well-being.
Councilor Abaday cited existing public spaces in the city, such as Magsaysay Park, Gaston Park, the Rio de Oro Boulevard, and Duaw Park, which already offer areas for relaxation and recreation. He emphasized the unique opportunity to build on these existing spaces by creating a park specifically designed for the health and happiness of the elderly.
“We recognize the importance of having spaces where our elderly can go out, breathe fresh air, and engage in light exercises,” Abaday said.
“By developing a park in CDO, we are not just creating a new space; we are enhancing the lives of our citizens, encouraging them to stay active and enjoy the beauty of life,” he added.
Abaday's proposal includes park amenities such as outdoor fitness equipment, resting areas with benches and shaded spaces, playgrounds, meditation and yoga areas for mental and spiritual health, and a community activity area for gatherings, seminars, and group events.
Councilor Bernie Esparcia in support of the proposal suggested collaboration with the Technical Working Group of Project Lunhaw, a green initiative currently proposed for development near the new bridge in CDO, to incorporate the needed amenities for the park.
Councilor Edgar Cabanlas added that the Pelaez Sports Center, the old landfill in Upper Carmen, or a space at the newly proposed city hall could be potential sites for the park.
Vice Mayor Bebot Rodriguez referred the matter to the Committee of the Whole for further study and deliberation.
